For example, students read David Macaulay’s Cathedral: The Story of its Construction and analyze how he uses words and images to depict the complex process of architectural design and the sequence of construction in the medieval period. In order to develop a thesis about the characteristics of Macaulay’s style as a writer/illustrator, they examine a collection of his books and write an essay about his style as a writer of literary nonfiction.
