A poem is a passage that often uses rhyme and rhythm. Poems are made up of lines instead of sentences. A group of lines is called a stanza. Poems often sound like a song if read out loud.
These are the parts of a poem:
Rhyme
Using words that end in the same sound.
The lines below end with the same “o” sound in the words “roar” and “door.”
The roar, the roar, the rising roar
It makes me hide behind the door
Alliteration
Alliteration is using words that start with the same letter. In the line below, three words start with the “r” sound.
The roar, the roar, the rising roar.
Repetition
Repetition is using the same words or phrases in lines and stanzas. In the line below, the word “roar” is repeated.
The roar, the roar, the rising roar.
Rhythm
Rhythm is made of beats that sound like music; they sound like drum beats you can clap to.
