Add & Subtract Within 20

2nd Grade

Alabama Course of Study Standards: 2

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies such as counting on, making ten, decomposing a number leading to ten, using the relationship between addition and subtraction, and creating equivalent but easier or known sums.
  1. State automatically all sums of two one-digit numbers.

Arkansas Academic Standards: 2.OA.2

  • Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies
  • By the end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers
Note: Fact fluency means that students should have automaticity when recalling these facts.

Arizona - K-12 Academic Standards: 2.OA.2

Fluently add and subtract within 20. By the end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

Common Core State Standards: Math.2.OA.2 or 2.OA.2

Ohio's Learning Standards: 2.OA.2

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. See standard 1.OA.6 for a list of mental strategies.

Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE): 2.NR.2.1

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using a variety of mental, part-whole strategies.

Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks: 2.OA.2

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.9 By end of grade 2, know from memory all sums of two single-digit numbers and related differences. For example, the sum 6 + 5 = 11 has related differences of 11 – 5 = 6 and 11 – 6 = 5.

North Carolina - Standard Course of Study: 2.OA.2

Demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction, within 20, using mental strategies.

New York State Next Generation Learning Standards: 2.OA.2

  1. Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. Strategies could include:
    • counting on;
    • making ten;
      e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14
    • decomposing a number leading to a ten;
      e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 = 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9
    • using the relationship between addition and subtraction; and
      e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4
    • creating equivalent but easier or known sums.
      e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13
  2. Know from memory all sums within 20 of two one-digit numbers.

Tennessee Academic Standards: 2.OA.2

Fluently add and subtract within 30 using mental strategies. By the end of 2nd grade, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers and related subtraction facts.

Wisconsin Academic Standards: 2.OA.2

Flexibly and efficiently add and subtract within 20 using multiple mental strategies which may include counting on; making ten; decomposing a number leading to a ten; using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

Pennsylvania Core Standards: CC.2.2.A.2

Use mental strategies to add and subtract within 20.

Florida - Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking: MA.2.2.1

Recall addition facts with sums to 20 and related subtraction facts with automaticity

Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE): 2.NR.1

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using a variety of mental, part-whole strategies.
