The underlined digit is in the hundredths place, so its value is 8 hundredths.
So, the value of the underlined digit is 0.08.

The underlined digit is in the tenths place, so its value is 6 tenths.

Multiply each digit by its place value.

The value of the 1 in the hundreds place is 1 × 100.
The value of the 1 in the tens place is 1 × 10.
The value of the 8 in the ones place is 8 × 1.
The value of the 4 in the tenths place is 4 × $\frac{1}{10}$.
The value of the 4 in the hundredths place is 4 × $\frac{1}{100}$.
The value of the 6 in the thousandths place is 6 × $\frac{1}{\mathrm{1,000}}$.

So, the number in expanded notation is
1 × 100 + 1 × 10 + 8 × 1 + 4 × $\frac{1}{10}$ + 4 × $\frac{1}{100}$ + 6 × $\frac{1}{\mathrm{1,000}}$.

First, multiply.

Then, add.
