The Amazing Mudskipper
The best known walking fish is the mudskipper. Mudskippers are part of the goby family of fish. They live in the coastal mudflats of the Pacific and Indian oceans and on the Atlantic coast of Africa. These fish use their muscular pectoral, or "swimming," fins and two sucker-like pelvic fins to move on land. In fact, mudskippers move better on land than they do in the water, "walking" by using their pectoral fins like crutches. They can also jump as high as two feet in the air, and even climb onto rocks and into the lower-hanging limbs of coastal mangrove trees.
These carnivorous creatures actively hunt on land during low tide, consuming insects, small crabs and shrimp, worms, and small fish stranded by the outgoing tide. They also vigorously fight to protect their land territories from other mudskippers and engage in elaborate courting rituals that involve the males' jumping high into the air to display their impressive pectorals.
