Literary Genres

Fictional literary genres refer to different categories of stories that have specific characteristics that set them apart from other types of stories. Stories in the same genre may have similar styles of writing, themes, settings, character types, and an overall predictable plot pattern. Being able to recognize and understand the characteristics of different literary genres can help readers comprehend a variety of stories more easily.

Realistic fiction —

This genre deals with events that could believably occur in real life and with characters who react similarly to real people. Conflicts in these stories often revolve around social or personal issues.

Historical fiction —

In this genre, the plot of the story is set in a past time period. Historic customs, events, and people are often included in these stories.

Fantasy —

In this genre, magical and/or supernatural elements, often taken from mythology, are a common part of the plot, theme, or setting. Stories are often imaginative and feature extraordinary people or events.

Adventure —

Stories in this genre give readers a sense of danger or excitement. Characters usually go on a journey and must brave a series of difficult situations.

Mystery —

Mystery stories revolve around a crime or puzzle of some sort. The main character will often be a detective or investigator who has to find clues to solve the mystery.

Science fiction —

Also called sci-fi, this genre focuses on stories about advanced scientific topics and technology. Some examples of topics include alien life, spaceflight, and time travel. Stories often take place in some future time.

Stories do not have to stick to just one genre. In fact, many stories can span multiple genres. Recognizing the genre or genres of a story can help readers predict what the story will be about and how it will unfold.
