Research & Synthesis

To research something is to find information about it.

Sources are the people and places from which you get your information.

You should use more than one source when looking for information about a topic.

Your sources should be relevant and believable.

If possible, use both primary and secondary sources.

- Primary Sources provide firsthand information.

- Secondary Sources provide secondhand information.

To synthesize is to combine ideas from different sources.

When researching a topic, take notes. Write down where you got the information, too.

Think about how the facts you gathered from different sources are connected. Combine the ideas in ways that make sense to you.

When you write, use your own words. Do not copy the exact words from your sources. If you use another person's exact words, put them in quotation marks, and tell your readers whose words they are.

Paraphrasing is putting ideas you read or hear into your own words. Paraphrasing is good practice when writing reports.

Plagiarism is copying someone else's words and presenting them as if they were your own. Plagiarism is not acceptable.

works cited page: A works cited page is a list of the sources used in your report.

For a book, include at least—

Author's name, last name first.
Title of the book.
Year the book was published.

For an article or chapter in a printed encyclopedia or other book, include at least—
