- Homographs
- Homographs are words that have many different meanings but the same spelling.
Examples:
Bare – uncovered, unclothed; simple
Bill – money, part of a bird's mouth
Check – a bill in a restaurant; an action meaning to examine something
Organ – a body part, a musical instrument
Pants – breathes hard, clothing for the legs
Patient – person receiving medical treatment; handle problems or delays well
Point – a dot, to direct (with a finger) at something or someone
Right – correct, proper, the opposite of left
Tire – to be weary, part of a vehicle
Type – a category of people or things with common characteristics; to write something on a keyboard
To figure out the correct word to use in a sentence, think about the following:
- What is the sentence about?
- How is the word used?
- What part of speech is the word (verb, noun, etc.)?
- Could the word be replaced by something else?
