- Poem
- A poem is a passage that often uses rhyme and rhythm. Poems are made up of lines instead of sentences. A group of lines is called a stanza. Poems often sound like a song if read out loud.
These are the parts of a poem:
Rhyme
Using words that end in the same sound.
The lines below end with the same “o” sound in the words “dog” and “log.”
The dark, dashing, and daring dog
jumped over the large, low log.
Alliteration
Alliteration is using words that start with the same sound. In the line below, four words start with the “d” sound.
The dark, dashing, and daring dog.
Repetition
Repetition is using the same words or phrases in lines and stanzas. In the line below, the word “rain” is repeated.
The rain, the rain, the falling rain.
Rhythm
Rhythm is made of beats that sound like music; they sound like drum beats you can clap to.
The RAIN, the RAIN, the FALLing RAIN
