Poetry

Poetry, or verse, refers to works that are written to evoke emotions or meaning. Formal verse follows specific meter and rhyme patterns, as well as stanza lengths. Free verse does not follow any specific meter, but uses other elements to create rhythm and flow.

Meter —

Meter refers to patterns of stressed and unstressed sounds in a poem. They are grouped into two- or three-syllable units called feet. Meter is used to give poems a structured, rhythmic sound and melodic quality.

Structural elements —

Structural elements in poetry refer to the way the words are arranged on a page. This includes line breaks and stanzas. It can also refer to the form of a poem, or the specific style it is written in.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Robert Frost
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
