Almost Forgotten
(1) John placed his backpack beside the door so he wouldn’t forget it when he went outside to get the bus. Sometimes, if things weren’t right in front of him, he forgot them. Then, he went to the kitchen to eat breakfast and pack a lunch.
(2) "Good morning!" his dad said as John entered the kitchen. "Your mom had to work late last night, so she's getting a late start today. Can I make you some pancakes for breakfast?" he asked.
(3) "Sure!" John said. John was surprised and happy to see his dad. He was usually already at work when John left for school.
(4) As John's dad was flipping pancakes, he asked, "What do you have going on today?"
(5) "I have to turn in my book report," John said. "And I have a math quiz."
(6) "Good luck!" his dad replied. "Do you have anything after school today?"
(7) "Yeah, I have soccer practice. Mom's going to pick me up right after school, so my bag is all packed!"
(8) Dad's John nodded and handed over a plate with a stack of pancakes. "Hey, do you want a ride into school today?" he asked. "I have some extra time this morning."
(9) "That would be great!" John said. After he finished his pancakes, John carefully packed his lunch—an apple, a granola bar, a cheese string, a pack of nuts, and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Then, he bundled up in a coat, hat, and gloves.
(10) "Ready?" his dad asked.
(11) "Ready!" John said. The two of them went out the side door to the garage and got into the car.
(12) As John's dad backed the car out of the garage, John saw the front door of the house open. John guessed that his mom must be getting the morning newspaper. Suddenly, he remembered! His backpack!
(13) "Stop, Dad!" he said. "I almost forgot my backpack!" He ran to the front door and grabbed the backpack his mom was holding out to him. "Thanks, Mom!" he said.
(14) As he climbed back into the front seat of the car, he said, "I have got to get better at remembering things!"
(15) John's dad chuckled. He thought about all the times he'd had to drive things John had forgotten to school or soccer practice. "You already are getting better!" he said.
How are the two highlighted parts of the text connected? |
In Paragraph 1, it says that John placed the backpack beside the front door so that he would remember it. However, in Paragraph 11, John and his dad went out the side door, not the front door. The difference between where John expected to leave from and where he actually left from helped cause him to forget his backpack.
What is the same about the two texts? |
The two texts are both about forgetting things. The first is a story, and the second is a poem, but they both have the same theme of forgetting.
