Sensory Language: Sensory language is writing that appeals to, or makes the reader think about, one of the five senses.

The five senses are: sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.

Example: The baby’s skin was soft like strawberry cheesecake.

The sentence makes the reader think about both sight and touch. The reader can picture (see) pink and soft (touch) skin of the baby.

Non-literal language: Sometimes, authors use a group of words to say more than what each word means. This is called non-literal language.

These are some examples of the use of non-literal language and the meaning:

apple of my eye: someone who is dear to me

between a rock and a hard place: facing something difficult or tough

spill the beans: tell a secret

on the ball: knowing something well

Idioms

An idiom is a common phrase or saying that has a figurative meaning. It doesn’t mean what it literally says, but people who know the language well understand what it means.

Jerry wanted to earn money to buy a bike. He planned to mow his neighbor’s lawns for $10.00 each. He added up all the money he thought he would make. He decided he would buy the bicycle he wanted in two months, just before summer break. However, his dad warned him, “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”

Mr. Sullivan is always helping people. He helps his neighbors shovel snow in the winter. He is an expert at math, so he helps my brother with his homework. He even takes care of our pets when we go on vacation. My mom always says that Mr. Sullivan has a heart of gold.
