Adjective: An adjective is a word used to describe, or modify, a noun or pronoun.

Descriptive adjectives can be used to describe the size, shape, color, or other attributes of a noun or pronoun.

Example:

The famished teenager had a towering sandwich and an icy glass of soda for lunch.

Descriptive adjectives can also describe a noun's purpose.

The ironing board had a large singe mark in the middle.

The rowing machine was Alison's favorite part of her exercise routine.

Adjectives can also be used to make comparisons.

Comparative Adjectives

Bring me the smaller box.

Most short comparative adjectives are formed by adding -er to the base adjective.

great — greater

Your piece is bigger than mine!

Superlative Adjectives

Janelle is the fastest person on the team.

Most short superlative adjectives are formed by adding -est to the base adjective.

tall — tallest

IRREGULAR COMPARATIVE/SUPERLATIVE FORMS

Adverb: An adverb is a word that describes, or modifies, a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

Example:

Rachel's sister walked unsteadily in her new high heels.

Gregory is busy right now, so he will talk to her later.

Tina and Tammy raced each other upstairs to get the first shower.

Adverbs of intensity describe how much or to what degree about a verb, adjective, or adverb.

Example:

The day of the picnic was especially beautiful.

Jason was almost finished with the level when the electricity cut out.

Adverbs of frequency describe how often or how frequently something occurs.

Example:

Monica sometimes forgets where she leaves her glasses.

Danny practices his piano daily, but Susan never wants to practice.
