A line graph uses points connected by lines to show
how a quantity changes in value, often over time.

Example:

In the graph that represents the amount Emilia has saved, the number of months is on the x-axis, and the amount she has saved is on the
y-axis.

So, in the graph, the point above Month 1 is at 13, the point above Month 2 is at 25, the point above Month 3 is at 40, the point above Month 4 is at 47, and the point above Month 5 is at 53.

The graph below represents the data in the table.

Example:

The dot above month 5 is at $53, and the dot above month 2 is at $25.

Subtract $25 from $53 to find how much more Emilia had saved in month 5 than in month 2.

$53 - $25 = $18

In a picture graph, the number of pictures represents
the number of items in each category.

Example:

The table shows that Larissa drank 2 fluid ounces of water at the first water stop.
Since

equals 2 fluid ounces, there is one

in the first water stop row.

The table shows that Larissa drank 6 fluid ounces of water at the second water stop.
Since

equals 2 fluid ounces, there are three

in the second water stop row.

The table shows that Larissa drank 4 fluid ounces of water at the third water stop.
Since

equals 2 fluid ounces, there are two

in the third water stop row.

Example:

In the graph, there are five shirts next to "Darius."
Each

represents 2 shirts.
So, Darius took 10 (5 × 2) shirts to the dry cleaners.

There are three shirts next to "Larry."
So, Larry took 6 (3 × 2) shirts to the dry cleaners.

Subtract 6 from 10 to find how many more shirts Darius took to the dry cleaners than Larry.

10 - 6 = 4

So, Darius took 4 more shirts to the dry cleaners than Larry.

In a bar graph, the heights of the bars represent
the number of items in each category.

Example:

The table shows that the grocery store has 14 boxes of raisin bran in stock.
So, the bar above "Raisin Bran" in the graph ends at 14.

The table shows that the grocery store has 12 boxes of corn flakes in stock.
So, the bar above "Corn Flakes" in the graph ends at 12.

The table shows that the grocery store has 17 boxes of granola in stock.
So, the bar above "Granola" in the graph ends at 17.

The graph that represents the cereal in stock at the grocery store is below.

Example:

The graph shows the website had 45 new members in week 3 and 40 new members in week 1.

To find how many more new members the website had in week 3 than in week 1, subtract 40 from 45.

45 - 40 = 5

So, the language learning website had 5 more new members in week 3 than in week 1.

A frequency table shows how often a certain
piece of data appears in a data set.

Example:

Keeva has 7 blue buttons, 8 brown buttons, 1 red button, 2 purple buttons, and 3 gold buttons in the jar.

Make a table with the color in one column and the corresponding number of buttons in the other column.

Example:

The table shows that Keeva has 8 brown buttons and 3 gold buttons.

Add the number of brown buttons to the number of gold buttons to find how many brown and gold buttons Keeva has.

8 + 3 = 11

Central tendency is used to describe the middle of a data set.
The median and the mode are measures of central tendency.

Spread is used to describe how close the data points in a data
set are to each other. The range is a measure of spread.

Median: The median is the middle value in a data set when the values are listed from least to greatest.
Mode: The mode is the value that occurs the most times in the data set.
Range: The range is the difference between the highest and lowest values in the data set.

Example:

First, find the median.
The median is the middle value in the data set.

Write the numbers in order from least to greatest.

3, 7, 7, 7, 12, 12, 18, 19, 23

The middle value in the data set is 12.

3, 7, 7, 7, 12, 12, 18, 19, 23

So, the median is 12.

Next, find the mode.
The mode is the value that occurs the most times in the data set.

In this data set, 3, 18, 19, and 23 each occur once, 12 occurs twice, and 7 occurs three times.

So, the mode is 7.

Then, find the range.
The range of a data set is the difference between the highest and lowest values.

In this data set, the lowest value is 3, and the highest value is 23.
Find the difference between 3 and 23.

23 - 3 = 20

So, the range is 20.
