Homophones
Homophones are words that sound alike but have different meanings and spellings.
Examples:
our (pronoun), hour (unit of time) their (pronoun), they’re (contraction of “they are”), there (adverb) mane (hair on the neck of an animal), main (chief, central)
Homographs
Homographs are words that have many different meanings but the same spelling.
Examples:
Bare – uncovered, unclothed; simple
Bill – money, part of a bird's mouth
Check – a bill in a restaurant; an action meaning to examine something
Organ – a body part, a musical instrument
Pants – breathes hard, clothing for the legs
Patient – person receiving medical treatment; handle problems or delays well
Point – a dot, to direct (with a finger) at something or someone
Right – correct, proper, the opposite of left
Tire – to be weary, part of a vehicle
Type – a category of people or things with common characteristics; to write something on a keyboard
To figure out the correct word to use in a sentence, think about the following:
What is the sentence about?
How is the word used?
What part of speech is the word (verb, noun, etc.)?
